Special Alert regarding a check fraud scam that has impacted a couple dealerships in North Florida this week:

We have been alerted that an old scam is making its rounds again in Florida…

People are being contacted via a Craigslist advertisement to clean houses. A (bogus) check arrives in the mail (drawn on the dealership account) where they are instructed to deposit the check, keep $500 for themselves and then forward the remaining from their account via money order to a “painter” for additional work.

Two dealerships were able to avoid any loss of funds due to the diligence of the dealership – daily review of their incoming checks/debits and communicating with the bank any checks they did not write so to block or return the checks before they post.

Other measures that would effectively stop this type of fraud would be a ‘Positive Pay’ or ‘Controlled Disbursement’ service that most banks can provide that effectively stops any non authorized checks from posting.
